• Long-term programme of detailed photometric and dynamical studies of large samples of galaxies and clusters of galaxies
• Study of the evolution of galaxies and its relationship to clustering
• The systematics of cluster and 'field' luminosity functions
• Construction of cluster colour-magnitude diagrams
• Study of correlations between velocity dispersion, volume density, integrated luminosity, the structure of supergiant galaxies, subclumping and the positional dependence of galaxy properties within clusters
• Detection of intergalactic cluster emission and the spatial dependence of diffuse X-ray emission on the galaxy distribution within clusters
• Analysis of the velocity distributions within clusters and the internal motions within the galaxies
• Measurement and analysis of magnitudes, colours, shapes and orientations for very large samples of galaxies
• Investigations into distance indicators and the cosmic distance scale
• Evaluation of the global properties of cluster and dwarf elliptical galaxies
• Development of photographic techniques, measuring machines and electronic detectors
